Short Story: The Pawn Shop

"They got themselves into that situation by their selves, you know," she said.

"Huh?" Gary paused as he put on his boots, eager to get out into the San Francisco sunlight.

"I said, those folks coming into your little shop got put into that situation all by their own doing."

"Okay, thanks, Sally. What do you have planned today?"

"I'm meeting Jessica in Financial District, then I'm...."

He was tired of listening to her complain about the people who lined up outside his shop on Castro. Rather than telling her to shut up, he just slipped out the door, as he liked to be early anyways.

Towards the end of his day, he told the last customer that his brooch was beautiful and gave him $33, even though nobody would probably ever buy it.
